Uploading scripts
PDF is the supported format. Fountain + .fdx convert at upload. .docx doesn't — yet.
Cuelist annotates PDF. Uploads happen on a project's Files tab — drag the file in, or click the upload button.
Supported formats
- PDF — primary. Any text-based or scanned PDF up to 50 MB.
- Fountain (.fountain) — converts to PDF on upload using a screenplay-print layout.
- Final Draft (.fdx) — converts to PDF on upload, same layout.
Not yet supported
.docx files are rejected with a friendly error. Microsoft Word, Pages, and Google Docs all export to PDF in two clicks — convert first, then upload:
- Microsoft Word: File → Save As → choose PDF.
- Apple Pages: File → Export To → PDF.
- Google Docs: File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf).
We're watching demand for native .docx conversion and will add it when the volume justifies the runtime cost.
Processing
After upload, Cuelist hashes each page, generates a thumbnail, extracts the text layer, and indexes pages by their content hash. Hash-based indexing is what lets you replace a script with a revised PDF without losing annotations on unchanged pages — bookmarks anchor on hashes, not page numbers.
Replacing a script
Upload a new version on the Files tab. The processing pipeline diffs against the previous version: pages with identical hashes carry their annotations forward, changed pages surface in the Orphans tab so you can re-anchor or discard the annotations that don't fit anymore.
